A performing arts project began at Nyinkka Nyunyu
to facilitate a range of cross-cultural community
performances combining traditional and contemporary
dance, music, theatre and visual arts to be showcased
at the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre in
Tennant Creek.
The target groups are young people aged 14-19
years, marginalised young people and young people
not enrolled in formal education but not excluding
young people aged 12-25 years engaged in formal
secondary or tertiary education. Potential youth
groups include, Tennant Creek High School, Youth
Development Unit, Tennant Creek Primary School,
Barkly region Community Schools, Wang Kana- Kari
Hostel.
Four community performances will be conducted
by a variety of local, Northern Territory and
interstate artists. Performances will coincide
with local events including Youth Week, NAIDOC
Week, the Desert Harmony Festival and the End
of the School Year. Performances will be preceded
by two weeks of workshops by visiting artists
in residence. A cross cultural exchange program
will be implemented for the visiting artists.

The young people involved will be encouraged to
undertake certificate level training whenever
possible in relation to the performing arts. Potential
certificate courses and modules include, dance
and events management. The Nyinkka Nyunyu performance
program will support young people to engage in
any further education in the arts providing links
to relevant training programs locally and interstate.
Work experience and work placement can also be
facilitated at Nyinkka Nyunyu for young people
interested in careers in the arts.
Artists will be invited to engage in cultural
education, bush trips, youth activities and local
events. Artists will be billeted with local residents
wherever possible. Some artists will also be available
for additional workshops for community groups
and schools outside the Nyinkka Nyunyu Performance
program. A list of visiting artists with contacts
will be provided to the Tennant Creek and Barkly
community.
